I've been listening to The Ditty Bops for the last half hour now, and they're spectacular if you like poppy, folky bluegrassy sort of music with really beautiful female voices. They have a bunch of songs that you can stream on their website if you're interested.

I know, I've missed almost a week of updates now. This is partially due to the fact that my images NEVER load up in Blogger like they're supposed to. Easy my ass. Not to mention that Photobucket isn't much more dependable. I really don't know if I'm going to be able to keep that daily sketch thing up at least until I get to school. No promises. Anyhow, I did a self portrait today. There are mistakes, but it's still a sketch, and probably won't get much further than a sketch. However, it's not so horrendous that I can't show everyone. I haven't done much portrait drawing with pencil. I'm much more skilled with charcoal, but it's very messy. I had to switch to an 11x 14 sketch pad because the 8 1/2 x 11 one I had was just too small. I don't know how I ever drew that small as a child...

The image isn't loading right now, so I'll try again later. I hate the damn internet sometimes.

Anatomy and Calvin

Well, today I decided after a some-what lengthy perusal through the Pencil Jack Forums that I would try to start to learn some anatomy. As I'm sure anyone who's tried to draw from imagination can agree, it's pretty difficult to be convincing when you're drawing from your brain if you don't have a good foundation of anatomy in there. Good thing, however, that I have bought some books in the past that have just layed dormant until today. Anywho, here's a little doodle I copied out of the book. It's the first step on my way to not sucking as hard.

The second thing I have for everyone today is a goofy little Calvin and Hobbes doodle I whipped up really quick as an excuse to gush about Bill Watterson's work, and also as an excuse to get used to having a stylus in my hand again. I drew it old-fashioned with a pen and paper (fancy that!). I colored it in Photoshop, though. Anywho, here it is:

Now, onto gushing about Watterson. I've been reading Calvin and Hobbes since I can remember. I own just about all of the books as well, as I'm sure any self-respecting Waterson fan does. One of the things that I always found particularly amazing about Waterson's work was his ability to tell so much with so little. His mark and line work is usually fairly simple and yet, it conveys exactly what he's going for. His black and white strips have just as much presence as his colored strips. He used line in a very nice way. His lines weren't all over the place, and usually had a lot of open forms. This gave an airy, free feel to his linework, even though it was definitely put down with very specific intentions.

His coloring was even more spectacular, as his color, while inside the lines, also had it's own presence. He used the color to define shapes just as much as he did line. Take, for example, Calvin's hat-puff in the above picture. I didn't copy his line work exactly, I only had a thin tip sharpie, but that's besides the point. The essence of Calvin's puff is still there. What I'm getting to is the fact that he didn't draw that entire puff. He drew some lines there and then colored to make that puff. It would look like a puff even in black in white, but it really looks like a puff in color.

Watersons ability to put realistic drawings (like the comics where Calvin goes to the museum and imagines dinosaurs, etc.) next to his cartoon characters was also awe-inspiring. Not to mention his rendering capabilites were amazing. Waterson was great at doing environments when he felt there needed to be one. The Spaceman Spiff environments are some of the coolest enviornments I've seen done in comic format since Windsor McKay. Waterson pulled it off in a usually far more simpler way, but still in a very efficient and elegant way.

Waterson is a big influence on my work in just about every way.

Sorry to anyone looking into those Cd's I had mentioned. I took them to the Record Archive today in a hasty last-ditch for a bit of pocket cash. I ended up with about $60 cash, so it was pretty alright. Sorry folks.

I plan to start posting daily sketches here, unless they're absolutely terrible. However, you can't draw a masterpeice everytime so I just might show you my crap. I think I'm also going to try to do a daily journal-cartoon. These will help me get back into the habit of drawing everyday, and get me into a schedule. Today is an exception because I have a doom headache. I am going to draw a record archive themed one for tomarrow, so there should (hopefully) be at least two new things here tomarrow.

So here's an older cartoon based on my brother and I's trip to Taco Bell the other day. He was taking his sweet time, so I asked him...well, you'll see...

Well, I don't know if anyone reads this stupid thing anymore, but it's about to start getting really noisy in here again as my next semester of schooling starts soon.

All of that aside, I'm looking to get rid of a butt load of CD's for fairly cheap. Such Cd's are including but not limited to: Thursday, Thrice, From Autumn to Ashes, The Get Up Kids, Bright Eyes, Punk O Rama, AFI (almost their entire discography), Saves the Day (almost the entire discography) and many, many more Cd's I couldn't force myself to listen to. I should have some images up here later of some stuff I've been doing for classes. Sorry, it's been a busy time 'round these parts lately.

Anywho, I decided to night to give myself a crash course in Corel Painter IX. I am currently borrowing my friend's Ren & Stimpy DVD, so they were the subject of the crash course. I know it's really rough. I had to save it from painter to PHotoshop CS2 for the web so it got really roughed up. Oh well, you get the idea. I did a charcoal sketch first, then painted it with oils, and then ink pen for the outlines. It was mostly to get a feel for the program, so I don' tknow if I'll finish it or not.

Recently I was interviewed for a local Utican newspaper type thinger about the Speak Out show that I showed my George Bush Paper doll in. The article is here. The picture at the top of the page is an image of the doll.

It occurred to me lately that I had used this blog earlier for far too personal usage, so that has been cleared from here. I want this to be strictly about my artwork. I'll find another place for my opinions to go.

Did you folks know that Chuck Close was on Seasame Street? I saw him on there this morning, because I coudln't sleep. I was tossing and turning all night, then took NyQuil at about 5am and watched stuff 'til I stumbled upon Seasame St. at around 6 or so. And our buddy Chuck Close was on there showing one of his paintings. Sure, his segment was about ten seconds long because kids that age don't really catch onto what he does anyway, but it was still cool. They called it "tricky." They showed this painting.

They started by showing a really close up look at one of the squares around his nose and zoomed all the way out. Then Big Bird said something retarded. They compared the painting to Chuck who was looking very uninterested. It was kinda funny.
